KICK-OFF MEETING OF AMPROJECT ON ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE FUNDED BY FRRB

On 6 February 2023, the kick-off meeting of the AMPROject project on the antibiotic-resistance of orthopedic infections, funded by the call “Unmet Medical Needs”, Fondazione Regionale per la Ricerca Biomedica di Regione Lombardia, took place at the new headquarters of the IRCCS OspedaleGaleazzi-Sant’Ambrogio (MI).

The project is coordinated by Dr. Arianna B. Lovati of the IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi – Sant’Ambrogio, in collaboration with the University of Insubria (Prof. Flavia Marinelli and Dr. Elena Rosini – Department of Biotechnology and Sciences of Vita), University of Pavia (Prof. David Sarlah – Department of Chemistry) and FIIRV (Dr. Mara Brunati and Dr. Giacomo Carenzi – Laboratory of Microbial Collections and Medicinal and Analytical Chemistry).

AMPROject aims to develop antimicrobial peptides (AMP) to combat the development of resistance of bacteria commonly involved in orthopedic infections in the presence of prosthetic implants or synthetic materials. The peptides will be delivered to the site of infection through an osteoconductive biomaterial stimulating the deposition of new bone tissue following the loss of substance induced by the infection itself.

FIIRV has a central role in the project, given the expertise in microbiology, biochemistry and analytical chemistry. FIIRV will perform the in vivo toxicity studies on AMPs, their release profile from materials and will support the production of AMPs by optimizing the fermentation processes up to the pilot scale.
